Van Pernis hit the mark
The Friday My Turn column by Mr. Mark Van Pernis really hits the mark. He should not have been removed from the Leeward Planning Commission (political).
The county for years has been just playing around with affordable housing (talking a good game).
Developers should be required to build it as part of their project. A useless piece of property does nothing. At least have the developers clear the property, bring in all utilities, cut the building pads so it’s ready to go. Use the money others have paid in lieu of to build projects. It seems that there are special favors or breaks being done for the “poor developers.”
Also projects that are approved and going forward should be required to complete the entire project within five years and not dragging it out over 20 years. Living in or beside a construction project is bad enough but dragging it out is a major problem. Now the fox is in the hen house (Mr. Kern’s)
Hawaii is afraid of ideas that have worked on the mainland on many fronts! Like developers are required to make all necessary improvement fronting there property for the future (like widening roads).
Project time extensions to begin projects should only be granted one time for up to five years or start from the beginning. To many things can change during these delay tactics.
